Finding the Best Sandbox Sand

Although buying sand for your sandbox is rather obvious, it's important that you buy the right sand to ensure your kids don't get hurt. A lot of commercial sand is sharp and coarse and not made for playing in, so make sure you buy play sand, river sand, or beach sand. You'll also want to make sure and read the label to ensure that the sandbox sand you buy does not contain crystalline silica or quartz, both which are known carcinogens.

Once you've made sure your sandbox sand is safe, it's time to have a little fun with it. Sand for the sandbox no longer has to be brown and traditional, you can always go with white sandbox sand for a finer grade. Or you can get a bit wild and have a lot of fun buying colored sandbox sand. Full of bright colors, from greens, blues, reds, yellows, and more, colored sandbox sand adds a whole new dimension to your sandbox.

Finally, you need to know just how much sand to purchase for your sandbox. If it doesn't tell you in the owner's manual, or you've lost it, a simple equation will quickly tell you just how much sandbox sand you need. Simply measure your contained area (depth x width x length in feet) and divide by 27 to get the number of cubic yards required.
